Tomorrow is the day when we will learn whether our elected representatives have been successful in averting Roxroy’s deportation scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 18th. Since Roxroy received his order to appear for deportation just 10 days ago, I’ve had a ball of fear in the pit of my stomach while anger and prayer vie for supremacy. It seems unbelievable to me that such a loving husband, father and grandfather, could be separated from his children in 2 days. This past week Roxroy and his supporters have fought to get meetings with congressional representatives and senators in a desperate attempt to head off his deportation. I could not attend any of the delegations because of my daughter’s pregnancy, and so have mostly waited and prayed and talked with those presenting Roxroy’s case. Tomorrow we will know . . . I repeat over and over: “I lift my eyes to the hills. From whence does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth . . . The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for evermore.” May God be with you, Roxroy. We love you.

RoxRoy Salmon is a Brooklyn father and community activist resisting deportation so that he can remain with his US citizen family. Earlier this week, on 8/18, Roxroy Salmon was scheduled to turn himself in to Immigration and Customs Enforcement at 26 Federal Plaza. Members of First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York, Families for Freedom, and the NY New Sanctuary Coalition stood in vigil outside the federal building. We did not see Roxroy enter the building and can only assume that he made the deeply personal decision to not show up. Even in the face of this, our work in the movement for immigrant justice in the United States forges ahead. Over the past two years Roxroy’s Defense Committee built a campaign to try and help keep his family together by working to stop his deportation. Our efforts included gathering petition signatures, holding vigils, writing letters and garnering the support of many clergy and community leaders. As we held vigil again on 8/19 to reflect and heal, we reaffirmed our guiding principles that dividing families is immoral and unjust and we will continue onwards in the fight for immigrant rights.

At least one individual or organization fasted each day from March 8 to July 7, 2009 as RoxRoy fought to avoid a deportation order. Scroll down this page to contribute, or to read reflections from other fasters.

If you want to see latest press coverage, background on RoxRoy’s case, or how to get involved, you’ve come to the right place. This blog is maintained by RoxRoy’s Defense Committee, an ad-hoc gathering of representatives from the New Sanctuary Coalition, First Presbyterian Church and Families for Freedom in New York City.

Soul Food

Hunger striking. I know Gandhi and King did it. Brave youth organizing
for the right to live at home also did it (see DREAM Act campaign). So
did the last man I visited in jail. Javier was an inmate in Arizona’s
Tent City – a jail mis-managed by Joe Arpaio, self-styled “America’s
Toughest Sheriff.” Javier was 1 among 1,800. lemme repeat: EIGHTEEN
HUNDRED, who in May 2009 protested for just one edible meal a day.
Sheriff Joe makes it a point to feed his prisoners expired green bologna
and leave them to rot under the blazing desert sun. He’s turned Phoenix,
America’s 5th largest city, into a virtual jail for any immigrant
walking the streets. At this moment, his officers are arresting a Brown
driver for a “broken taillight.” They’ll score a deportation from the
racial profiling.

Javier, Tent City, Phoenix – they all come to mind in the last minutes
of my first fast. I am honored to say that today, July 7th 2009, is the
first day I have ever given up food to strengthen struggle. I am honored
to say that I did it for love of Roxroy, a man who was a great father
before I met him, and who I have witnessed become a community leader in
the truest sense of the word: rather than close doors and raise walls
around his personal suffering, he’s opened his life to scrutiny and
support. They always come hand in hand, struggle is a risk. But Roxroy
knows that through him, those of us who seek truth can find light. And
he gives those of us who want justice an opportunity to channel our
power into a test of will and law. It’s funny: I see the campaign to
free Roxroy as a campaign to save ourselves, in the deepest sense. To
nurture the elements that make life worth living.

Fasting is hard work. I gotta be honest. Today I wanted a chocolate
brownie by 11am. I opened the refrigerator 3 times. I touched a pepper
more longingly that I’ve ever touched a person. I salivated. What gave
me the strength to get through it? Breathing, conversations with other
Movement leaders, and a healthy dose of joy. If I can do this, I am
ready to kick it up. I thank Roxroy for this opportunity to align mind,
body and soul. I look forward to the escalation. Round 2, bring it.

I’m fasting for RoxRoy because I don’t know what else to do.

Because I see how many hours have been dedicated to stopping RoxRoy’s deportation and yet we still tread so solemnly towards the 7th, the day of his last hearing.

All of this time and energy to try to stop the deportation of one dad whom we have come to know and love. All of this time and energy required to at least resist what the system threatens to do to his family…while hundreds of thousands of dads today are trudging in his same heavy shoes.

I fast for strength. I fast to remind myself – as RoxRoy always reminds me – that the Spirit is the true advocate and the true reality from whom we derive our hope. It’s not about the petitions or the letters or the long meetings – it’s about the Spirit running through them and bringing us closer to each other. I fast to be brought closer to that primal reality, which is a comfort and guide in these worrisome days.

Who will tell RoxRoy’s baby granddaughter, London, where “YaYa” has gone? Who will explain to 13-year-old Elijah why his dad has been taken when he most needed him? Who will account for so great a loss?

I am fasting
Because RoxRoy’s spirit cannot be detained.
Because RoxRoy’s love cannot be deported.

I am fasting to remember that mountains can move.

Father’s Day is ultimately about families. It marks a day in which memory can play a big part, but it was a sobering experience in the rain today to hear from children to whom memory is the only way they can “enjoy” their father. It isn’t our common mortality that has snatched their father away. It is unjust laws, laws that would seem to violate other laws of two hundred years’ standing, those other laws we thought were sanctified by the thousands who poured out that last measure of devotion purely to safeguard this two-hundred-year heritage. All that heritage violated by the sharp knock at the door.

I fast today in memory. Some of the memories I have are memories of my father, a history professor whose work often reminded me that history is always around us. History isn’t in a cubby-hole over there. We live history, each of us. We cannot escape it. Maybe our own American history will always be an agon, an agon in which the urge to expand community will always contend with the urge to shrink community. I often find that a depressing thought.

What was especially painful in the Children’s Vigil today was to recall what the mindless urge to shrink community may do to Roxroy’s children. There they were today with their father, all of them often smiling. Did it cross their minds — well, it crossed mine — that this could be the last Father’s Day they have together? Something so ordinary suddenly becoming so precious. The last cup of coffee brought to their father on a Saturday spent outdoors. The last time they make signs together. The last time they live anything outside their daily routine together.

Hate attacks the ordinary. That is what hate does in the ‘96 legislation. It deprives Americans — child citizens — of the ordinary. Is there only one way, then, for us to prize the ordinary as precious too? Must that one way be deprivation of the normal? Can nothing be held precious precisely because it is normal? Isn’t that a saner way? To hold something precious because we can have it every day? We thought — many of us — that we had the Constitution and the Bill of Rights every day. Did that make them less precious?

I know, I may be falling into something a little too close to despair. Is it just because I’m hungry? Not all these thoughts are draining, though. Memory can also bring up things that keep us going. My father would often say, when I’d get too serious, “The purpose of life is to have fun.” Well, right now, today, Roxroy and his children seemed to have fun. The excitement, talking to the crowd as a family, valuing the help of strangers, as Roxroy reminded us as we were getting ready to go — all this was fun. And, as much as this may sound like a cliche, it was living in the Now. So I’m grateful for this day. And even though I may be grateful for this day because of the real likelihood that there will never be another like it again, I hope I can be just as grateful for it if we end up celebrating another just like it next year.

I’m listening to the John Coltrane Quartet playing “Vigil” and thinking about the Children’s Vigil that Roxroy will be speaking at this Saturday, June 20th. Coltrane’s vigil speaks to me of an intense longing for closeness with those who have gone before; the immigrant families who will be gathering on Saturday are seeking only to maintain the closeness they have with the family members who are already here. Information on the Vigil follows:

Annual Children’s Vigil Celebrates NY’s Support of American Kids, Immigrant Families
Honor Father’s Day by Calling for Passage of the Child Citizen Protection Act (HR 182)

WHAT: On the eve of Father’s Day, Families for Freedom’s Youth Committee will be holding its annual Children’s Vigil to raise awareness about American kids whose families are ripped apart due to the federal government’s draconian deportation policies. The year’s Vigil will celebrate the overwhelming support New York has shown for this bill and pay special tribute to immigrant dads fighting to stay with their families. Youth will follow the Vigil by holding a street corner speak-out to educate the community about what they can do to help win passage of this legislation.

WHY: As President Obama sets his sights on immigration reform, American kids and their immigrant families want him to know that New Yorkers’ priority is to keep our families together. The Child Citizen Protection Act (HR 182) is the only bill currently in Congress that unties the hands of immigration judges to consider the best interests of U.S. citizen children during deportation proceedings. In the past fiscal year, nearly 350,000 people were deported leaving behind thousands of American kids who need their moms and dads. The Vigil will be a celebration of the hundreds of New Yorkers who have lobbied, called, written, and visited Congress to help get this legislation reintroduced and cosponsored in 2009!

WHEN: Saturday, June 20, 2009, 11am-1pm

WHERE: Union Square Park, South (E. 14th St, across from Whole Foods Market)

WHO: Youth Organizers from Families for Freedom
Immigrant Organizer and father, Roxroy Salmon and his children
Representatives from: Congressman Jose Serrano’s Office, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke’s Office, State Senator Jose Serrano’s Office, New York City Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito’s Office, and MORE!
Religious leaders and congregants from the NYC New Sanctuary Coalition
Community Organizations: the American Friends Service Committee, Children’s Defense Fund, Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights and many more organizations!

This article (link above) describes one of the most hideous injustices of the US immigration system I have read about. Can you imagine losing your rights to your child permanently just for unauthorized entry and using false documentation, something the vast majority of economic migrants are forced to do? I’m a mother and grandmother, and I can’t. It makes me cry, but it also makes me extremely angry. As bad as I know our policies are (yes, we are all responsible if we do nothing), I did not realize that detainees convicted of these ridiculous charges could have their parental rights terminated. This is beyond outrageous. People of faith need to stand together to fight for a moratorium on all raids, detentions, convictions and deportations of immigrants stemming from simply unauthorized entry into the US. None of this will likely be addressed by comprehensive immigration reform. We need to do more!

For those who celebrate the season of Lent, it is a time to fast or at least withhold from a favorite or unhealthy food or habit. But as people prepare to break their fasts in celebration of a new season, I begin my fast this weekend. To me, this is a perfect time to fast because fasting is all about healing and rejuvenation.

When the hunger pangs subside, what results is an almost euphoric feeling. This is a time when the body is cleansing itself. It is also a time when the body and mind can align and the spirit can look inward. In the face of great injustice, pain, and trauma, inner peace can still be cultivated. We each need this inner strength to continue to seek justice in solidarity.

Almost two years ago, my husband was detained for three months and then deported. We still live apart. I was unable to eat during the time my husband was detained due to the trauma we experienced. Now, I am fasting not out of trauma, but because I am ready to heal. And because I will never forget the struggle that Roxroy and thousands of others are facing. This new Spring season is the perfect time.

The Last 1/2 Hour Is the Worst

I fasted today as is the custom at FFF to do each Wednesday. I normally fast from sun up to sun down and I think I have the secret…Wake up, eat no breakfast and you will be well on your way to NOT feeling hunger pangs during your day of fasting. But as you get down to the end of the day, you will notice that you want to eat a bear, hunger pangs or no. When I start to think about it though, maybe the hunger pangs are the point. Maybe feeling the urgent need for food is like the urgency we need to feel to keep struggling on with our families, cases, and fight. So maybe next time I will let myself feel the pangs as a reminder of the urgent need that we are aiming to meet with this fast, struggle and movement.
